STORYLINE
United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Good Will Ambassador Nicole Kidman made a two-day visit (14,15 October) to Kosovo, her first trip as UNIFEM's Good Will Ambassador. Together with UNIFEM Executive Director Noeleen Heyzer, she visited women in rural villages, met with women leaders, representatives of the government and UN community.

At the opening reception in Pristina, Ms. Kidman explained her role as UNIFEM Good Will Ambassador, and told the people gathered that she was there to listen, learn, and to be a voice for the people of Kosovo. The visit provided her an opportunity to learn first-hand about the experiences of women in Kosovo and UNIFEM's efforts to support them.

In Gjakova, a town in the west of Kosovo, she visited a shelter for women victims of violence. The Gjakova shelter, established in July 2000 and operated by Ms. Sakibe Doli, provides a temporary home for 14 women and 6 children and provides a full range of services to help these women get a new start.

Together with UNIFEM Executive Director Noeleen Heyzer, she met with women who had been victims of sexual violence, war widows, and women who are still searching for missing family members.
