STORYLINE
Bogdan-Lucian Aurescu of Romania, Hilary Charlesworth of Australia, Sarah Hull Cleveland of the United States, Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo Verduzco of Mexico, and Dire Tladi of South Africa were elected today (9 Nov) as members of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a term of office of nine years, beginning on 6 February 2024.

After a single round of voting in the General Assembly and five rounds of voting in the Security Council, the two chambers agreed on the five winning candidates.

China’s Ambassador Zhang Jun, in his capacity as President of the Council for the month of November announced the winning jurists and congratulated them and wished them “every success in the high office to which they have been elected.”

The ICJ is composed of 15 judges elected to nine-year terms of office by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. These organs vote simultaneously but separately. In order to be elected, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes in both bodies. This sometimes makes it necessary for a number of rounds of voting to be held.
