“We have seen many so women and children living in tents, and that is the condition of this village right now, and many other villages like this right across Herat. People are desperately in need of shelter. The winter is coming”.

STORYLINE
Afghanistan has recently experienced multiple devastating earthquakes, resulting in a significant loss of life and extensive damage. As of October 14, the impact of these earthquakes has been felt by over 19,250 individuals in Herat province. 

Approximately 90 percent of those affected are women and children, underscoring the urgent need for assistance.  

In response to this crisis, UNDP has swiftly allocated an initial sum of USD 1.5 million to support immediate relief efforts and early recovery initiatives, aiming to provide immediate relief and support the recovery and reconstruction of the communities impacted by these devastating earthquakes. 

As part of the coordinated UN response, the UNDP team stationed in Herat is actively assisting affected families in rebuilding their homes, protecting livelihoods and facilitating access to renewable energy sources.
