STORYLINE
Stirring speeches and cultural performances were aplenty as South Sudan marked International Day of Peace at the Nyakuron Cultural Center in the capital city, Juba, in the presence of communities, government officials, and international partners.

SOUNDBITE (English) Guang Cong, Deputy Special Representative – Political, UNMISS:
“The need for sustained peace in South Sudan has never been more acute as the country prepares to hold its first national elections and draft its permanent constitution. These critical processes must take place in an environment that respects freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, which does not inhibit, but rather encourage civic engagement.”

This significant Day comes at a critical moment in this young nation’s history as it struggles to complete its much-delayed democratic transition by conducting free, fair and credible elections at the end of 2024, though intercommunal violence and humanitarian needs continue to soar.

SOUNDBITE (English) Elia Lomoro, Minister for Cabinet Affairs, South Sudan:
“We must observe peace every day, every week, every month for all of us throughout by observing good governance both in the political sector as well as in the economic sector.”

The full participation of women in ongoing peace processes as well as equal rights were key issues touched upon during the event.

SOUNDBITE (English) Margaret Apollo, Chairperson, Women’s Group:
“We demand inclusion of women in peace and security programmes and discuss [a] whole [of society approach to] conflict prevention, comprehensive disarmament, inclusive participation, protection, justice, rule of law and security sector reform.”

For his part, First Vice President, Dr Riek Machar urged everybody to shoulder collective responsibility and galvanize momentum in achieving outstanding peace benchmarks so that this young nation can look forward to a brighter future.
SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Riek Machar, First Vice President, South Sudan:
“We need to step up. We need to fast track so that we can get to the end activity that we want to do, which is allowing the people to elect their leaders.”

The event included a cultural programme that showcased South Sudan’s diverse heritage.
