Speaking at the General Debate at the General Assembly today (20 Sep) in New York, Mikati said that the vacancy of his country’s presidency also “led to the exacerbation of the economic and financial crisis and the failure to launch the reforms and economic and financial recovery plans on which that the Lebanese depend to save the country.”
The Syrian crisis contributes as another challenge that Lebanon is facing. The Lebanese diplomat reiterated the call for “the development of a roadmap in cooperation with all the international stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to the Syrian displacement crisis before its repercussions split out of control.”
“The third challenge is Israel’s continuing occupation of parts of our lands in the south,” Mikati said, adding that “its ongoing aggressions and daily violations of the Lebanese sovereignty and violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 to which Lebanon reaffirms its commitment and its respect of all relevant Security Council resolutions.”
Mikati also took the opportunity to thank all the troop contributing countries to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
He said “UNIFIL’s mandate was renewed by the Security Council at the end of August.
