6. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Peace is under assault across communities, countries, and regions. And peace is also under assault within the hearts and minds of people by the dark forces of disinformation and hate speech. Drop by drop, the poison of war is infecting our world. Placing millions in the line of fire. Eroding human rights and the security and wellbeing of all people. And reversing hard-won development gains.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Pushing for peace means focusing on prevention, dialogue and mediation to heal divisions, defuse conflicts and ensure every community has a stake in a shared future. Pushing for peace means rallying around the tools that support global trust and solidarity — including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Charter. Pushing for peace means addressing discrimination and racism. It means rescuing the Sustainable Development Goals and expanding opportunities for women and girls. Pushing for peace means accelerating our battle against climate change, ending our addiction to fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy. It means amplifying facts and science over lies and hate. And pushing for peace means supporting activists, young and old, in their calls for progress.”

STORYLINE
Marking the International Day of Peace, Secretary-General António Guterres today (13 Sep) said, “Peace is a job that belongs to each and every one of us.”

In his remarks at the Peace Bell Ceremony on the Occasion of the 42nd Anniversary of the International Day of Peace, Guterres said, “peace is under assault across communities, countries, and regions. And peace is also under assault within the hearts and minds of people by the dark forces of disinformation and hate speech.”

“Drop by drop,” he added, “the poison of war is infecting our world. Placing millions in the line of fire. Eroding human rights and the security and wellbeing of all people. And reversing hard-won development gains.”

The UN Chief continued, “pushing for peace means focusing on prevention, dialogue and mediation to heal divisions, defuse conflicts and ensure every community has a stake in a shared future. Pushing for peace means rallying around the tools that support global trust and solidarity — including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Charter. Pushing for peace means addressing discrimination and racism.”

He said, “it means rescuing the Sustainable Development Goals and expanding opportunities for women and girls. Pushing for peace means accelerating our battle against climate change, ending our addiction to fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy. It means amplifying facts and science over lies and hate. And pushing for peace means supporting activists, young and old, in their calls for progress.”

In 2022, there was a more than 50 percent increase in conflict-related civilian deaths, largely due to the war in Ukraine. One quarter of humanity lives in conflict-affected areas, and many more people suffer from poverty, hunger, injustice and inequalities.

The International Day of Peace, celebrated annually on 21 September, was designated as a day of nonviolence and cessation of hostilities. Commemorative events are being held ahead of the day as the organization goes into a security lockdown during the General Assembly high-level week (18 to 22 September).

The two-day observance continues on 14 September with an event focused on mobilizing young people to take action for the Sustainable Development Goals - a set of 17 benchmarks, adopted in 2015 to address some of the most pertinent issues of our time, such as poverty, injustice and environmental degradation, to end human suffering and improve people’s lives.
