“On Gabon, we, as you've heard from State Department, and as well from me condemn this overthrow of the government. We condemn any military overthrow as we did in the situation in Niger. We are still looking at and trying to get a sense of what is happening on the ground there. But just to be clear, this is something that we all condemn.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
“On the Mali sanctions resolution, we were disappointed. This was another example of Russia obstructionism. Russia not taking the interests of the people of Mali in an account in their actions in the Security Council. Pushing for the lifting of sanctions on weapons coming into Mali is not what the Mali government ought to be thinking about. Mali’s government ought to be focusing its attention on addressing the needs of its people every single day. And so I was extraordinarily disappointed by what happened yesterday.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
“There's nothing we want more than peace for the people of Ukraine. And I expect that there will be intense pressure on Russia to pull their troops out of Ukraine and allow the Ukrainian people to have peace.”

STORYLINE
Asked about Gabon, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned the overthrow of the government, reiterating that “we condemn any military overthrow as we did in the situation in Niger.”

The United States concluded its presidency of the Security Council for the month of August. The country’s Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke to reporters today (31 Aug) on the achievements of the month’s work of programme.

Asked about the failure of adopting the resolution on the renewal of the sanctions regime on Mali, Thomas-Greenfield said, “we were disappointed,” adding that “this was another example of Russia obstructionism. Russia not taking the interests of the people of Mali in an account in their actions in the Security Council.”

She continued, “Pushing for the lifting of sanctions on weapons coming into Mali is not what the Mali government ought to be thinking about. Mali’s government ought to be focusing its attention on addressing the needs of its people every single day.”

Asked about the upcoming high-level week of the General Assembly in September, the US Ambassador said, “There's nothing we want more than peace for the people of Ukraine. And I expect that there will be intense pressure on Russia to pull their troops out of Ukraine and allow the Ukrainian people to have peace.”

Albania will take on the presidency of the Security Council for the month of September.
