STORYLINE
Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and the Head of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) travelled to Yei River county to meet a cross-section of communities, including religious leaders, civil society, humanitarian partners, women, youth and county authorities to discuss key peace and security challenges.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“Yei has its own distinct security challenges. It has its own distinct development issues. It is the area which has seen the greatest number of voluntary returns with the stresses that return places on the resources they have available, including and [which was] especially mentioned, was education.

SRSG Haysom held a special bilateral with religious leaders, given their important influence on urging diverse residents to eschew conflict and embrace peace, especially as elections approach.

SOUNDBITE (English) Father Alex Yobo, Catholic Bishop, Yei River County: “The most driving thing or the most [difficult] thing that people are facing here in Yei is insecurity, that, for sure, anybody who stays in Yei here will tell you that, even the smallest child: insecurity.”

Haysom also met with uniformed personnel from the UN Peacekeeping mission at the UNMISS company base here, inspecting an Honour Guard, and discussed necessary humanitarian support with the County Commissioner, who made an appeal for more help from the Agencies, Funds and Programmes, given the rising number of returnees which, in turn, has led to increased needs, especially food.

SOUNDBITE (English) Aggrey Cyrus Kanyaikwa, Commissioner, Yei River County:
“I want to take this opportunity to request you to put Yei in the center of your priorities that you set, in response to the returns programme. It is massive. It is giving us a lot of pressure food wise. We are getting pressure, just the first season, we don't know how long it will last, but for the last two months we have experienced hunger here.”

But despite challenges, SRSG Haysom’s visit was a beacon of hope that returnees and residents in Yei River county are not alone in their difficult but meaningful efforts to rebuild their lives after civil war.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS): “We were able to discuss the ways in which UNMISS could be a true partner for peace with the community here in Yei.”
