STORYLINE
United Nations Peacekeeping today (26 May) marked its 75th anniversary by participating in a special Inside Out art project at New York’s historic Times Square, with black and white posters covering the iconic space showing portraits of UN peacekeepers, community members and other partners.
The event aimed to recognize the efforts of United Nations peacekeepers and the communities they serve as they strive together to secure peace in some of the most fragile political and security environments.
Peacekeeping Chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, speaking from the podium noted that “since 1948, more than two million men and women have served the cause of peace in peacekeeping operations.”
He acknowledged, “the service, the support, the sacrifice of all these men and women who are serving in the field in some of the most dangerous and difficult places on earth.”
Captain Cecilia Erzuah, who has served with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei since last year, as the Commander of the Ghana Engagement Platoon, was recently bestowed the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, said, “peace begins with you and I. You cannot be a peacekeeper if you don't give out peace. You must first have peace within, peace with your God if you are a believer, and peace with your neighbor. As you stand there, you can start a conflict and you can also promote peace.”
As Gender Advocate of the Year 2022, Erzuah called on those present to be “peace ambassadors” by promoting peace as well as gender equality.
The Inside Out Project, founded by artist JR to help communities around the world to stand up for what they believe in, has seen the participation of more than 500,000 people in 149 countries and territories, with more than 2,000 Actions created.
JR said, “our project is all about showing faces. You know, it's people standing for what they believe by showing their faces and getting together around something that means and is important for them. So, here we are celebrating the peacekeepers but also celebrating everyone that believes that peace begins with them.”
After having his picture taken, Lacroix said, “there are out there 85,000 men and women, civilian, military, police, who are protecting hundreds of thousands of people every single day, in the most difficult situation, in the world in the most dangerous environment in the world. And their contribution to world peace their service needs to be acknowledged and recognized.”
The United Nations is conducting a year-long global campaign, titled Peace Begins with Me, to honor the service and sacrifice of more than two million men and women who have served as peacekeepers under the UN flag since 1948.
