The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR and partners scale up aid efforts to reach more people escaping conflict in Sudan. Over 30,000 refugees have so far been verified, physically counted and identified in Chad as registration exercises continue. UNHCR

“If the crisis in Sudan continues, it is possible that Chad could receive up to 100,000 refugees and the financial needs would be about 130 million dollars. So, this is a real appeal to the international community to be able to help Chad, to be able to help the humanitarian actors and the humanitarian organizations that are involved in this emergency response. It is now that we need this mobilization, these financial efforts once again to be able to really make this rapid intervention and to be able to properly install these people in inner parts of the country for their protection and to really have good assistance.”

STORYLINE
The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR and partners scale up aid efforts to reach more people escaping conflict in Sudan. Over 30,000 refugees have so far been verified, physically counted and identified in Chad as registration exercises continue.
Fighting in Sudan continues to force thousands of people from their homes looking for safety and protection both in Sudan and in bordering countries. The most significant cross-border movements so far have been Sudanese refugees arriving in Chad and Egypt, and South Sudanese returning to South Sudan.
Most new arrivals in Chad and South Sudan are women and children. In Chad, some new arrivals are still staying out in the open or under trees, while others are sleeping in makeshift shelters close to the border. More than 30,000 refugees have so far been verified, physically counted and identified. UNHCR continues verification and registration exercises.
UNHCR has deployed core relief items for distribution from global stockpiles, for Chad and South Sudan. Plans are also in place to relocate new arrivals to the Gaga site, 100 km from the Sudanese border, where a pre-existing camp
