And closer to here, just last week, I ran through California San Joaquin Valley, listening to farmers explained the threat to their crops, livelihoods and communities of what is now a 23-year drought,” ultramarathon runner said at the 2023 Water Conference’s Interactive Dialogue. STORYLINE
“In Kenya, I walked beside women and girls as they risked their lives each day to fetch water. And closer to here, just last week, I ran through California San Joaquin Valley, listening to farmers explained the threat to their crops, livelihoods and communities of what is now a 23 year drought,” ultramarathon runner said at the 2023 Water Conference’s Interactive Dialogue.
Speaking at the 2023 Water Conference’s Interactive Dialogue “Water Action Decade: Accelerating the implementation of the objectives of the Decade, including through the UN Secretary-General's Action Plan” in New York today (24 Mar), Mina Guli called, “Make no mistake.”
She stressed, “we are in the midst of a global water crisis far greater and with far deeper implications on our environment, our communities, our people and our supply chains than we ever could have imagined. As one of the local guides said to me as we climbed up a glazier in Tajikistan. Mina, please tell these people directly. The time for soft language is over. We need real action and we needed it now.”
Ultramarathon runner Mina Guli has completed a year-long campaign to run 200 marathons, raising awareness of the world’s water crisis. Guli has run through countries in Oceania, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas since she began the campaign in March 2022.
During her time in Egypt, she attended the COP27 UN Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, where she highlighted the critical importance of water and freshwater ecosystems to climate action, particularly adaptation.
Also speaking at today’s Interactive Dialogue, Usha Rao-Monari, Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said, “We must democratize water data. Digital innovation can improve governments and others access to accurate data and bolster political momentum with informed decision making. Robust water data must form part of the decision-making tools of all.”
She continued, “We must work with local communities to better manage their ecosystems focusing on improved resilience through nature-based solutions among others. And we should focus on partnerships that enable impact at scale, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries to ensure investments in access resilience and quality by combining financial flows to drive down the cost of capital and ensure the highest impact.”
Sivan Yaari, founder and CEO of lnnovation: Africa, a nonprofit organization that brings solar, agricultural and water technologies to African villages, said: “There is actually plenty of water. But what we don't have is the energy, the energy that is needed to pump the water to transfer the water to where it is needed.”
In order to accelerate efforts towards meeting water-related challenges, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”. The Water Action Decade will commence on World Water Day, 22 March 2018, and will end on World Water Day, 22 March 2028.
