STORYLINE
Secretary-General António Guterres today (23 Mar) said the United Nations “very much” counts on the European Union “to lead the transformations that are necessary in order to be able to put back on track the 2030 agenda.”

Talking to reporters following a meeting with the members of the European Council in Brussels, the Secretary-General said “This is indeed a crucial moment. We have a perfect storm in many developing countries, combination of factors that lead to a very dramatic situation. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are moving backwards, more hunger, more poverty, less education, less health services in so many parts of the world. And it is clear that our international financial system is not fit for purpose to deal with such a huge challenge.”

The Secretary-General welcomed the financial support of the European Union and its member states to the United Nations system and called for a renewed commitment to the SDGs – including at the September SDG Summit – and urgent humanitarian needs.

The meeting offered an opportunity to discuss pressing global matters, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its far-reaching consequences, the climate emergency and growing global inequalities.

In view of the latest report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Guterres said, “we are close to the tipping point that will make 1.5 degrees impossible to achieve. So, we need dramatic action. We need an acceleration agenda. And once again, we count on the leadership of European Union in this regard, as it has been demonstrated in several other moments.”

On the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he said it was “causing tremendous suffering to the people of Ukraine, but also have a huge impact globally” and said that he had exchanged views on “how best to confront these challenges” with the members of the European Council.

During their meeting, the Secretary-General discussed the consequences of the invasion, stressing his call for a just peace, in line with the UN Charter, international law and the resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 23 February. He provided an update on enhancing global food security through the Black Sea Grain Initiative and efforts to facilitate the exports of Russian food and fertilizers. The Secretary-General commended the EU and its citizens for their solidarity towards Ukrainian refugees.
