STORYLINE
United States Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield today (17 Mar) said the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) “remains one of the most repressive governments in the world” as “it continues to systematically neglect the well-being of its people and deny them their human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
Following an Arria-formula meeting on the human rights situation in the DPRK, the US ambassador read a joint statement, flanked by the Permanent Representatives of Albania, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.
Thomas-Greenfield said, “this week, the DPRK launched yet another ICBM continuing its unprecedented pace of launches since the start of 2022” and added that “this unlawful WMD ballistic missile program is underpinned by many of the DPRK’s human rights violations.”
She said “the DPRK’s use of force and exploited labour, both domestically and overseas, support this unlawful and threatening program, as the food distribution policies that favour the military and lead to chronic malnourishment. Among the DPRK’s citizens.”
The ambassador said, “the DPRK government continues to hold 80 to 120,000 people in political prison camps where they have subjected to arbitrary or summary executions, torture, starvation, gender based violence, including forced abortions, forced labour and inhuman conditions.”
The DPRK, she continued, “also reportedly seeks to repress the enjoyment of rights outside his territory through acts of transnational repression, including assassinations, surveillance, intimidation, abductions, and forced repatriations sometimes with assistance from other governments and sometimes without those government's consent, which shows the DPRK is lack of respect of state sovereignty.”
Arria-formula meetings are organized by the members of the Security Council as a "flexible and informal forum for enhancing their deliberations." The Arria-formula meeting owes its name to Ambassador Diego Arria of Venezuela who initiated the practice in 1992.
