“Afghanistan faces enormous challenges. The dire humanitarian and economic situation is compounded by the Taliban’s decisions that deny opportunities for education, employment, and freedom to women and girls. The threat of terrorism also persists. All of these have a devastating impact on the people of Afghanistan. The role of UNAMA is becoming more important and indispensable at this time of crisis.”

STORYLINE

The Council today (16 Mar) unanimously adopted two resolutions regarding Afghanistan.

The first draft resolution extends the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year, until 17 March 2024, without changing its mandated tasks and priorities.

The second resolution requests that the Secretary-General conduct an independent assessment that provides recommendations for an integrated and coherent approach among different actors in the international community to address the current challenges facing Afghanistan.

The representatives of Japan and the United Arab Emirates addressed the Council today as penholders on Afghanistan.
