STORYLINE
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on Monday (27 Feb) visited children and families affected by the powerful earthquakes that hit southeast Türkiye earlier this month.

During the visit, she witnessed the destruction firsthand, inspected UNICEF supplies sent in response to the disaster, and participated in psychosocial support sessions in Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş.

Thousands of children and families are at risk after two large earthquakes and dozens of aftershocks hit southeast Türkiye and Syria on 6 February 2023.

The initial 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit just after 04:00 local time, when many children and families were asleep at home, with a second 7.5 magnitude quake hitting later in the day.
