“It's actually where some of the gangs are very active. And I've just listened to victims and people who work in these neighborhoods where gangs control territory and population, and it's a living hell. I've heard about 500,000 children living in these circumstances, not being able to go to school properly, not being able to be comforted by their parents because their parents are afraid of what might happen the next day. I hear that 20,000 people are in catastrophic, famine-like conditions in a country where the world does not put the spotlight. The people, the most impoverished ones, those who are in the most vulnerable situations, need help.”

STORYLINE
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is in Haiti for a two-day official visit.
On Wednesday (8 Feb) in Port-au-Prince, Türk met with Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the Me Jean Victor Genues minister for foreign affairs andEmmelie Prophet-Milcé, the acting minister of justice.
The High Commissioner also met with civil society organizations working on a range of human rights issues, as well as victims of gang violence, including sexual violence.
Türk said, “I'm here in the capital, Port au Prince, in Haiti. What you see behind me are some of the neighbourhoods.”
He continued, “It's actually where some of the gangs are very active. And I've just listened to victims and people who work in these neighborhoods where gangs control territory and population, and it's a living hell. I've heard about 500,000 children living in these circumstances, not being able to go to school properly, not being able to be comforted by their parents because their parents are afraid of what might happen the next day. Türk will fly to Ouanaminthe in the northeast of the country today (9 Feb) to see the situation of migrants and refugees on the border with the Dominican Republic and to hear from local authorities and community organizations.
