STORYLINE
Across Europe and Central Asia, vulnerable populations and health workers face a triple threat — influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19. WHO

In the 2022-23 winter season, the influenza season epidemic started early, and influenza cases and hospital admissions have been increasing since November. RSV has also been on the rise, and COVID-19 is still a threat.

This is of concern as when influenza, RSV and COVID-19 co-circulate, the risk to vulnerable populations increases, and health services may come under severe pressure.

From mid-November 2022 onwards, a number of countries in WHO’s European Region, including Kyrgyzstan, have been reporting increasing rates of influenza transmission. As of January 2023, many countries in the Region reported high or very-high intensity and/or widespread activity indicating high seasonal influenza virus circulation across the Region.

Vulnerable populations in Kyrgyzstan are protecting themselves by getting vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19.

Baktygul Mamatova, Immunologist at Bishkek Polyclinic, said, “We, as medical workers, as a risk group, are the first to get it. I can’t say that I don’t get sick at all. I do get sick, but it’s easier to bear.”

Kanai Alamanov, Patient at Bishkek Polyclinic, said, “Earlier, there was a vaccination against coronavirus. I had the COVID-19 vaccine, and now the influenza vaccine. It gives you a chance to protect yourself from diseases, gives you some kind of guarantee for a healthy lifestyle.”

Kasymbekova Kaliya, Technical Officer, WHO Kyrgyzstan, said, “We know that influenza can cause severe complications, especially in the elderly, over 65 years, those who have chronic heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, some allergic conditions.”

Ludmila Kinda Ivanovna, Care home resident, said, “I get sick a lot. I am allergic to all antibiotics, allergic to many medicines, I have asthma, heart problems, I had a heart attack twice. My body is very weak, so vaccination means a lot to me.”

In Kyrgyzstan, over 65% of people at risk were vaccinated against influenza in the previous influenza season (2021/2022).

WHO / Europe’s recommendation is for all countries in the Region to reach the goal of 75% influenza vaccine coverage for people at risk.
