STORYLINE
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause problems to migrants all over the world, including in access to health and other social programs, two UN experts informed.
Briefing journalists in New York today (19 Oct), the Chair of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, Edgar Corzo Sosa, said one of the problems is access to vaccines.
Sosa also mentioned the crisis in Ukraine, saying his Committee has noted “a special risk for children in the context of migration, just leaving the country with their families, they arrive to countries that are part of our international convention.”
“So this is a concern that we have, just to say that they have to be treated with dignity,” the expert said.
The Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Felipe González Morales, also briefed journalists, saying that “every year, as millions of people are displaced in the context of early onset disasters, the livelihoods of millions more are affected by slow onset environmental change and degradation.”
According to Morales, “States should ensure that they respect, protect and fulfill the human rights of all migrants in the design and implementation of climate change related migration policies.”
For the Special Rapporteur, “it's very important, in this regard, the issue of access to regular migration.”
Morales also said that, as stated in the report he presented to the General Assembly, he is “very concerned by the lack of pathways for regular migration, especially for climate change related migrant, putting them at risk.”
