STORYLINE
The Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) today (27 Jul) told the Security Council that for the first time the PBC has shared its Programme of Work with the General Assembly and Security Council through formal communications, “a major step towards institutionalization of the advisory relations between PBC and other organs of the United Nations.”

Presenting PBC’s Annual Report to the Council, the Chargé d’Affaires of Bangladesh to the United Nations, Monwar Hossain, in his capacity as Chair of the PBC said, “the Commission has indeed made significant progress in strengthening the Commission’s role during its 15th session, particularly its bridging, advisory and convening role.”

He added that, “building on this upward trajectory, in 2022 Bangladesh as the Chair, aimed to adopt a more ambitious and forward-looking agenda for the Commission.”

Hossain said the PBC “continues to emphasize on delivery by responding to the demands in a timely manner,” and this year “planned to engage with at least twelve different countries and five different regions, in addition to its ongoing thematic priorities.”

Currently, nine Council members serve on the PBC. Seven PBC seats are allocated to the Security Council, which always include the P5 (China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US). Kenya and Mexico hold the other two Council-allocated seats. Brazil serves on the PBC as one of the seven member states that the General Assembly elects, while India is one of five PBC members selected for being a major troop and police contributor to UN peace operations.
