A UN humanitarian official today (12 May) reported that on Monday, another 174 civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine, bringing the total number of civilians evacuated from the steel and neighbouring areas to over 600. UNIFEED

Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya, told the Security Council that the operation, conducted by the United Nations together with the International Committee of the Red Cross, was “a truly monumental feat amid the selling and destruction ongoing in the east.”
Briefing on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, Msuy said, “almost 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes, of whom 8 million are internally displaced. 227 partners, the majority national NGOs, have provided humanitarian assistance to over 5.4 million people, many of those in the east.”
This scale-up, she said, was “unprecedented.”
