3. SOUNDBITE (English) Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, United Nations:
“On Monday, we together with the International Committee of the Red Cross, were able to evacuate another 174 civilians from the Azovstal steel plant, and other parts of Mariupol. This was the third operation in the past week out of Mariupol, bringing the total number of civilians evacuated from the steel plant in Mariupol and neighbouring towns to over 600, a truly monumental feat amid the selling and destruction ongoing in the east.”
4. Wide shot, Council
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, United Nations:
“Almost 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes, of whom 8 million are internally displaced. 227 partners, the majority national NGOs, have provided humanitarian assistance to over 5.4 million people, many of those in the east. This scale-up is unprecedented.”
6. Wide shot, Council
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Omar Abdi, Deputy Executive Director for Programmes, UNICEF:
“As each day passes, more children are exposed to the horrors of this war. And just this past month, the UN verified that nearly 100 children were killed, and we believe the actual figures should be considerably higher. More children have been injured and face grave violations of their rights. Millions more have been displaced, schools continues to be attacked and used for military purposes, and water and sanitation infrastructure impacted. The war in Ukraine, like all wars, is a child protection and child rights crisis.”
8. Wide shot, Council
9. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“Many educational facilities in towns where active military activity is going are being used by the Ukrainian military as base points, as a result of which they have been significantly damaged. We also have the firm impression that norms of international humanitarian law exist for anybody but not for Kyiv. Schools, kindergartens and other children's educational facilities have been seized by the Ukrainian authorities, and that's not an exception to the rule but the rule. This inhumane method of carrying out military activities is jeopardizing the lives of children, depriving them of their right to education and destroying the educational infrastructure of Ukraine.”
10. Wide shot, Council
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Sergiy Kyslytsya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ukraine:
“The defenders of Mariupol have already done the impossible. They stopped the overwhelming Russian troops for more than three months. Their contribution to the destruction of the Russian blitzkrieg plans can't be over-estimated. Mariupol has paid a heavy price for this. The death toll among its residents for these months, about 20,000, is double the amount caused during the Second World War by German Nazis who killed 10,000.”
12. Wide shot, Council
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Sergiy Kyslytsya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ukraine:
“At least 226 children have been killed and 417 wounded by the Russians troops in Ukraine, but it's no doubt that the actual data is much higher as the occupied territory remains a no-go zone for any credible international mechanism.”
14. Wide shot, end of Council meeting
STORYLINE
A UN humanitarian official today (12 May) reported that on Monday, another 174 civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine, bringing the total number of civilians evacuated from the steel and neighbouring areas to over 600.

Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya, told the Security Council that the operation, conducted by the United Nations together with the International Committee of the Red Cross, was “a truly monumental feat amid the selling and destruction ongoing in the east.”

Briefing on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, Msuy said, “almost 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes, of whom 8 million are internally displaced. 227 partners, the majority national NGOs, have provided humanitarian assistance to over 5.4 million people, many of those in the east.”

This scale-up, she said, was “unprecedented.”

In his briefing to the Council, the Deputy Executive Director for Programmes at UNICEF, Omar Abdi, said, “as each day passes, more children are exposed to the horrors of this war. And just this past month, the UN verified that nearly 100 children were killed, and we believe the actual figures should be considerably higher. More children have been injured and face grave violations of their rights. Millions more have been displaced, schools continues to be attacked and used for military purposes, and water and sanitation infrastructure impacted.”

The war in Ukraine, he said, “like all wars, is a child protection and child rights crisis.”

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya told the Council that “many educational facilities in towns where active military activity is going are being used by the Ukrainian military as base points, as a result of which they have been significantly damaged.”

Nebenzya said, “norms of international humanitarian law exist for anybody but not for Kyiv” telling the Council that “schools, kindergartens and other children's educational facilities have been seized by the Ukrainian authorities, and that's not an exception to the rule but the rule.”

For his part, Ukraine’s Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya said, “the defenders of Mariupol have already done the impossible. They stopped the overwhelming Russian troops for more than three months. Their contribution to the destruction of the Russian blitzkrieg plans can't be over-estimated.”

Mariupol, Kyslytsya said,” has paid a heavy price for this. The death toll among its residents for these months, about 20,000, is double the amount caused during the Second World War by German Nazis who killed 10,000.”

He said, “at least 226 children have been killed and 417 wounded by the Russians troops in Ukraine, but it's no doubt that the actual data is much higher as the occupied territory remains a no-go zone for any credible international mechanism.”

Today’s meeting, under the agenda item “Maintenance of Peace and Security of Ukraine” was requested by France and Mexico and focused on the effects of the war on children.
