Each time we gather under circumstances such as these we recognize the immense sacrifice that all of our fallen peacekeepers have made. Any of us who have served in MONUSCO interacted with our peacekeepers, or witness the scale and scope of the challenges that the Congolese people confront each day, will be aware that peacekeeping requires commitment to the core values of the United Nations.”

STORYLINE
In the presence of the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, a memorial service took place in Goma on Saturday (2 Apr) for eight peacekeepers from Pakistan, Russia and Serbia who lost their lives in a helicopter crash.
The leadership of MONUSCO, the ambassadors of Pakistan, the Russia and Serbia, and representatives of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo attended the ceremony. The remains of the deceased were repatriated to their respective countries.
Lacroix said, “today we sit in contemplation, not only of the painful absence among us, but also the way that they strengthen our efforts in service of the Congolese people, and also of the way that their companionship has enriched life in MONUSCO, and also of their dedication to the cause of peace in this country and in the world. Any of us who have served in MONUSCO interacted with our peacekeepers or witness the scale and scope of the challenges that the Congolese people confront each day, will be aware that peacekeeping requires commitment to the core values of the United Nations.”
On 29 March, the mission reported that a search and rescue operation was underway, after a Puma helicopter had lost contact with MONUSCO and crashed in the restive North Kivu region. All eight peacekeepers on board lost their lives.
They had been on a reconnaissance mission in the area of Tshanzu, south-east of Rutshuru – the scene of recent clashes between Congolese forces and M23.
