STORYLINE
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said it estimates that over 44,000 Ukrainian refugees have crossed into Italy since last Saturday.

UNHCR said its staff met refugees from Ukraine crossing into Italy at the Fernetti border crossing with Slovenia, most of whom arrived by bus, van and some personal cars. The refugees told UNHCR staff that they are travelling to Italy to join family or friends already living in the country.

UNHCR said it was stepping up its presence at the border and currently has a team of five people who provide information on the asylum procedure and identify people with specific needs.

More than three million people have fled Ukraine in the start of the war. Most are hosted in neighboring countries, including Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova. Many are moving onwards across Europe to countries like Italy.

UNHCR said, despite the rapidly changing situation and extraordinary challenges, the response of governments and local communities in welcoming the refugees has been remarkable.

UNHCR said its staff are already deployed across the region. The Agency said it was strengthening and expanding its refugee protection and assistance programmes in support of host governments.
