STORYLINE
UNHCR’s Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie first stop in Yemen today was at site in Lahj governate where 35 families who fled their homes during the conflict found a shelter but are barely surviving.

She met with women who were forced to flee their homes in the past few years. The conflict and displacement had shattered their lives to pieces. The families lost their income, most children don’t go to school, most don’t have a birth certificate and many live on one meal a day, most of the time, it’s just bread and tea.

Most of the 35 families who live here owned land before they fled and lost their homes as well as their land. Like most Yemenis, 92 percent of all displaced Yemenis have no source of income at all and live on less than 40 $ a month.

The makeshift camp lacks all basic services, the closest source of water is 15 km away and there are no toilets or shower facilities at this place. The closest school is at least a 30 min walk away, but most of the children don’t go to school.

There are hundreds such camps scattered around the country and Humanitarian workers lack the needed funds to reach all those who are desperate for humanitarian assistance.

Jolie is in Yemen to draw attention to what she described as one of the worst forgotten humanitarian crisis in the world and call on the International community to support humanitarian agencies like UNHCR so they can reach millions of the most vulnerable people in Yemen who need urgent assistance.
