They cannot achieve any lasting peace without reconciling and being held to account the atrocities across the country. And accountability must be had.”

STORYLINE
Upon her return from a five-day trip to Ethiopia, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed today (11 Feb) said, “trust has been broken in Ethiopia, and we need to find ways to support the country, the leadership, the people find that pathway back to rebuilding that trust and therefore rebuilding peace for their people.”
Mohammed said her message in Ethiopia had been “that there was no finger pointing” and that “at this stage with the the conflict and the tragedies horrendous that that, no one wins, and the peace really is indispensable.”
She stressed “the burden” that the conflict has put on the shoulders of women and girls” and that “the cessation of hostilities was an emergency.”
The Deputy Secretary-General said, “Ethiopian women writ large were affected in a way that is unimaginable. In your worst nightmares you cannot imagine what has happened to the women in Ethiopia. And this is not by region, this is across the regions.”

During her visit, the deputy chief met people living in the regions of Tigray, Amhara, Somali, and Afar, where she witnessed the tragedies of the conflict first-hand, but also learned of the efforts made by the Government and people in Ethiopia, to end the fighting.
Mohammed represented the Secretary General at the opening of the 35th session oft he Assembly of the African Union (AU), where she spoke with African leaders on pressing issues, ranging from development and conflict, to the many humanitarian crises besetting the continent.
