3. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
"What we see today must worry us – and jolt us into action. A resurgence of Holocaust denial. Attempts to rewrite history. Efforts to whitewash and rehabilitate people who committed crimes against humanity. Meanwhile, survey after survey shows increasing ignorance among young people about basic facts of the Holocaust."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“United Nations must always be at the forefront of the fight against Antisemitism and all forms of religious discrimination and racism. We must always stand on the side of the marginalized and persecuted. Antisemitism, virulent anti-Muslim bigotry, persecution of Christians, racism, and anti-refugee hatred are becoming normalized in a coarsening public discourse – often amplified in online echo chambers of hate.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Anti-Semites don’t need cutting-edge technology to spread vicious lies. They have been fueling hatred and conspiracy theories for millennia. Social and economic turbulence has always created fertile ground for their bizarre fantasies. All societies must take action to tackle antisemitism, root and branch.”
8. Zoom in, candle
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Gilad Erdan, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Israel:
“The State of Israel rose up from the ashes of humanity’s darkest moment and ‘Never Again’ is woven into its very ethos. But the Jewish State is not a result of the Holocaust, rather the living promise that such atrocities will never happen again. ‘Never Again’ is not just a phrase that we say. ‘Never Again’ is a vow to ensure that history does not repeat itself anywhere. It is a vow to take action.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
“The United States was proud to co-sponsor the resolution put forward by Israel and Germany to combat the scourge of Holocaust denial. Unfortunately, we have more work to do. Right now, antisemitism is again on the rise. And we must act to root it out -- in our communities, in our countries, and in our institutions.”

STORYLINE
In his message to a virtual United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony marking the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, Secretary-General António Guterres today (27 Jan) said “what we see today must worry us – and jolt us into action.”

The Secretary-General said, “a resurgence of Holocaust denial. Attempts to rewrite history. Efforts to whitewash and rehabilitate people who committed crimes against humanity. Meanwhile, survey after survey shows increasing ignorance among young people about basic facts of the Holocaust."

Guterres stressed that the United Nations “must always be at the forefront of the fight against Antisemitism and all forms of religious discrimination and racism.”

He said, “we must always stand on the side of the marginalized and persecuted. Antisemitism, virulent anti-Muslim bigotry, persecution of Christians, racism, and anti-refugee hatred are becoming normalized in a coarsening public discourse – often amplified in online echo chambers of hate.”

The Secretary-General said, “anti-Semites don’t need cutting-edge technology to spread vicious lies. They have been fueling hatred and conspiracy theories for millennia.”

Social and economic turbulence, he added, “has always created fertile ground for their bizarre fantasies. All societies must take action to tackle antisemitism, root and branch.”

In his address to the virtual ceremony, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan said the State of Israel “rose up from the ashes of humanity’s darkest moment and ‘Never Again’ is woven into its very ethos.”

Erdan said, “the Jewish State is not a result of the Holocaust, rather the living promise that such atrocities will never happen again. ‘Never Again’ is not just a phrase that we say. ‘Never Again’ is a vow to ensure that history does not repeat itself anywhere. It is a vow to take action.”

For her part, United States Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said, “the United States was proud to co-sponsor the resolution put forward by Israel and Germany to combat the scourge of Holocaust denial. Unfortunately, we have more work to do. Right now, antisemitism is again on the rise. And we must act to root it out -- in our communities, in our countries, and in our institutions.”

Rejecting and condemning Holocaust denial, the General Assembly on 20th January urged Member States to develop educational programmes that will inculcate future generations with the lessons of the atrocity to prevent acts of genocide.

Adopting a draft resolution titled “Holocaust denial” without a vote, the 193-member organ also urged Member States and social media companies to take active measures to combat antisemitism and Holocaust denial or distortion in cyberspace.
