“In addition to the current response following the event, the bank was also able to support the emergency operation centers in Haʻapai and Vavaʻu. So, before the event, when the activity started to increase these operational centers in the outer islands were already operational 24 hours providing support and response to the communities on the ground. So, they've been crucial and critical in maintaining services to the outer islands, but also communicating with the main island. And I think that goes to the strength of the design of these projects and building the resilience of Tonga.”

Speaking from the capital, Nuku'alofa, Latu said the Tongan Government has deployed its initial damage assessment teams to the communities and outer islands and responding to the immediate needs on the ground.
