STORYLINE
Displaced families and their host communities in the Middle East had already been struggling to cope with the economic crisis and devastating impact of COVID. Now, winter storms have only exacerbated the situation and increased hardships, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).
For refugees, displaced families and their host communities, this winter threatens to be harsher than ever. Displaced people are already facing record low temperatures and struggling to keep their families warm in tents or improvised shelters, while also facing the threat of COVID-19.
UNHCR said there are over 10 million Syrian and Iraqi internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt.
Over 3.3 million of them are in need of winter assistance to help them prepare and cope with the winter. This will be the 11th consecutive winter in displacement for some of them.
UNHCR said it has been providing vital winter essentials such as warm clothes, shelter, thermal blankets and emergency winter payments to ensure families can buy what they need most.
