Honduran family finds safety and a new life in Northern Mexico after fleeing gang violence in their hometown.
Members of a criminal gang opened fire on the family house. The family cowered together on the floor, but one stray bullet perforated a paint can and it exploded. Dania's son was shot in the leg, and assailants chased them to the hospital, forcing them to flee Honduras.
Four years after fleeing Honduras, the family is stable, happy, and thriving. Now they are looking forward to becoming Mexican citizens, the next step in their refugee journey. Under Mexican law, recognized refugees are exempt from having to take a naturalization exam and can apply two years after receiving permanent residency. Some 500 refugees in Mexico are awaiting the resumption of the naturalization process which was suspended nationwide as part of COVID-19 contention measures.
Just as reaching a point of stability for refugees can take years, the Mexico operation of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is embracing a revolutionary multi-year approach to planning its programs to support and assist them. “With protracted refugee situations, planning over several years ensures the continuity of programs,” says Diego Morales, senior programme officer for UNHCR Mexico. “This means we can accompany refugees from the moment they request asylum to when they are fully integrated into their host communities.”
Mexico is one of 24 of UNHCR’s country operations worldwide that are adopting similar mid to long-term planning to better serve refugees, asylum seekers focusing on solutions, such as integration. A further fifty operations are joining for 2023 planning and beyond. By 2024 the entire organization will transition to this longer range planning.
