STORYLINE
Abdulla Shahid took oath of office today as the President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly. His presidency will highlight hope in “recovering from COVID-19, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet, respecting the rights of all people, and revitalizing the United Nations.”

Taking the oath of the office in the General Assembly in New York, the Maldivian diplomat said, “I solemnly declare that I shall truthfully perform my duties and exercise the functions entrusted to me as the President of the United Nations General Assembly, in all loyalty, discretion and conscience.”

Following the gavel of the new President, the 76th Session of the General Assembly opened.

The President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said, “on recovering from COVID-19, vaccinate the world is my top focus. We simply must close the gap of vaccine exercise.”

He noted that he will be holding a high-level thematic debate on vaccine equity with leading experts and world leaders soon.

On rebuilding sustainability from the pandemic, the President of the General Assembly said that he has been work with the Economic and Social Council, the United Nations system and the international financial institutions to “help ensure that the socio-economic recovery is forward thinking – it is bluer, greener and more resilient.”

UN chief António Guterres warmly congratulated Shahid of the Maldives on his election. He commended on Shahid’s longstanding diplomatic experience — including as Minister of Foreign Affairs - which will serve him well in his new role.

Guterres also said that coming from the Maldives, President Shahid can bring a fresh perspective on the unique experience of small island states, and he looks forward to close collaboration with the President.

On the challenges and divisions that the world is facing, Guterres said, “We must accelerate. We need to speed-up our response to COVID-19, with vaccines, treatment and equipment for all — not only those with the most.”

He continued, “we need to invest in all of the systems that support human development. Health care, nutrition, water, education, and protection and full equality for girls and women. We need countries to commit and live up to bold climate targets at COP26 in Glasgow. The war on our planet must end.”

“The wars on each other need to end, too,” Guterres reiterated. He said, “It’s time to focus on fighting humanity’s common enemy: the pandemic. The members of this Assembly must speak with one voice — we need peace, now.”
On 7 June 2021, the United Nations General Assembly elected Abdulla Shahid of Maldives as President of its seventy-sixth session, which runs from September 2021 until September 2022.
