STORYLINE
After addressing the opening of the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the President of the Economic and Social Council, Munir Akram, said the COVID-19 pandemic “has exposed the inequalities among and within nations,” and the global north and south “are diverging even further” in the response and recovery efforts.

Talking to reporters in New York today (6 Jul) Akram said, “we could turn this crisis around to an opportunity” if investments generated for economic recovery “can be directed towards sustainable development, towards a green global economy in the future, so that we could recover from the crises and at the same time address the climate and biodiversity objectives.”

Earlier in his address to the HPLF, he said “the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact everywhere, with health systems stretched and shattered, and lives and livelihoods devastated in so many countries. In addition to the millions of lives lost, the economic and social consequences have been severe, especially for the poorest countries and the poorest people.”

He expressed hope that deliberations at the 2021 HLPF “can provide a basis for a concerted multilateral effort to recover, build, resume, and accelerate progress towards the SDGs, ultimately realize the vision of the 2030 Agenda.”

The establishment of the HLPF was mandated in 2012 by the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), "The Future We Want".

The Forum meets annually under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the General Assembly for two days.
