3. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“This is a race against time. Either vaccination becomes much more quicker and much more equitable, and we’ll be able to prevent a possible dramatic mutation into a virus that is immune against the vaccine, or if we don’t close quickly enough and in an equitable way, sooner or later we might have a serious problem in which even those countries that have vaccinated, those countries that have to a certain extent abused their dominant position to vaccinate their population very quickly, all of a sudden they might discover that those vaccines will serve no purpose because the mutations in the global south will undermine the vaccination campaign in the global north.”
4. Wide shot, Guterres and Schulz on screen
5. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“We must have an equitable distribution and we are far from having it. We have seen vaccine nationalism, hoarding of vaccines, many countries buying three or four times the volume of their population, and on the other hand, we see enormous difficulty in supplying vaccines to the global south. And this is a tragedy that we need to avoid at all costs.”
6. Multiple screens, Sauerbrey, Guterres and Schulz
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Schulz, President, Friedrich Eber Foundation:
“The pandemic situation needs a worldwide, well-coordinated, well structured, and well managed counterstrategy, and this is missing for the time being. Therefore, we must double the production for sure, and we must support those countries where for the time being not sufficiently accessed the vaccines.”

STORYLINE
Secretary-General António Guterres today (28 May) said, “this is a race against time,” and added that unless COVID-19 vaccines are made available in quick and equitable way, “mutations in the global south will undermine the vaccination campaign in the global north.”

In a conversation with the President of the Friedrich Eber Foundation, Martin Schulz, moderated by the Head of opinion pages at Der Tagesspiegel, Anna Sauerbrey, during the 2021 Global Solutions Summit in Berlin, Guterres said, ‘either vaccination becomes much more quicker and much more equitable, and we’ll be able to prevent a possible dramatic mutation into a virus that is immune against the vaccine, or if we don’t close quickly enough and in an equitable way, sooner or later we might have a serious problem.”

The Secretary-General said, “we must have an equitable distribution and we are far from having it. We have seen vaccine nationalism, hoarding of vaccines, many countries buying three or four times the volume of their population, and on the other hand, we see enormous difficulty in supplying vaccines to the global south.”

This, he said, “is a tragedy that we need to avoid at all costs.”

For his part, Schulz said, “the pandemic situation needs a worldwide, well-coordinated, well structured, and well managed counterstrategy, and this is missing for the time being. Therefore, we must double the production for sure, and we must support those countries where for the time being not sufficiently accessed the vaccines.”

The theme of the dialogue was “We are in this together-How far is the global access to vaccines?”
