Russian Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told journalists that “to say from the outset” that the landing in Minsk of a Ryanair jet flying from Greece to Lithuania on Sunday and the subsequent arrest of blogger Raman Pratasevich, “is a forced landing, to condemn it and to introduce sanctions without any investigation; this kind of behaviour is absolutely irresponsible.” UNIFEED

“To say from the outset that this is a forced landing, to condemn it and to introduce sanctions without any investigation; this kind of behaviour is absolutely irresponsible, and we do not understand the reasoning of our European and American colleagues when they conduct such kind of things.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Dmitry Polyanskiy, First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“Mr. Protasevich, he is a blogger, that’s for sure, but before being a blogger he was also a fighter. He was a fighter in Ukraine, he was a fighter in the Azov Regiment of neo-Nazi and far right groups. I think that was the reason for what, the reason for Belarusian authorities to ask a warrant for his arrest, internationally. And he is in the internationally wanted people list. So, there are internal procedures in Belarus. Belarus has the right to apply them. Once Mr. Protasevich happened to be on Belarusian soil, this way or another, Belarusian control services had the right to arrest him.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Dmitry Polyanskiy, First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“There is a Chicago Convention which entitles the country that possessed the airspace to have to bear full responsibility for the flight. So, they have the right to do so. Again, they recommended to the pilot to land in Minsk Airport. It means that he had other options. He could continue to Vilnius, he could return to Kiev, or to any other airport, to Warsaw maybe. So, there were plenty of choices, and there were no jets in the air at this moment to intercept. There was a jet when it was already landing, in accordance, as we were told, with internal procedures of Belarus when there is a threat of terrorist attack.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Dmitry Polyanskiy, First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“There are clear double standards there, in retrospect, maybe there will be in the future. But I am absolutely sure that there will be no outcry if so-called Western-democratic country would do the same thing, as it happened with the plane of Evo Morales in Vienna in 2015. So, for me it’s clear double standards.”
