STORYLINE
The United Nations mission in Mali (MINUSMA) bid farewell today (16 Apr) to four Chadian peacekeepers who perished in a complex attack against the mission’s Aguelhock camp in the Kidal region on 2nd April.

Four Chadian peacekeepers, Capitaine Hamit Bahr Abdlrazakh, soldat de 2ème classe Adoum Idriss Djibrine, soldat de 2ème classe Tamour Waima Haroune and soldat de 2ème classe Adam Ali Mahamat, were killed and another 19 were injured during a complex attack undertaken by armed elements against the camp of the UN mission in Aguelhock, Kidal region.

Two were seriously injured when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) on 5 September in Aguelhok. Captain Massamaesso Tangaou from Burkina Faso passed away on 7 September as a result of a heart attack.

The ceremony took place at the MINUSMA Headquarter in Bamako in the presence of the UN Deputy Special Representative to Mali, Joanne Adamson , and the Deputy Force Commander of MINUSMA, among other dignitaries.

Joanne Adamson, UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General said, “We are sharing this sadness together this morning to honor our comrades – Chadian blue helmets – fallen in combat on April 2nd 2021 during an attack against MINUSMA mission’s Aguelhock camp. Our colleagues have paid the ultimate sacrifice by imposing a sliding defeat on the jihadust groups. The courage of the peacekeepers sent them a clear message of our determination to defend our mandate when the threat looms before us. You have shown exceptional courage which will go down in the annals of MINUSMA and which will inspire all the peacekeepers deployed in Mali. On behalf of the civilian, police and military personnel of MINUSMA, I declare to you, your death will not be a sacrifice in vain."

The bodies of the fallen soldiers were repatriated to Chad following the ceremony.

The mission supports implementation of a 2015 peace agreement signed by the authorities and two coalitions of armed groups, and is considered the most dangerous UN operation to serve in.
