“I'm happy that they can see me as a role model. And, you know, there's a lot of a lot of footballers out that are refugees as well. And them, you know, picking me, you know, for them to look up to. It's amazing. So, I just want to give a good message to everyone that does look up to me. And I'm happy that I can be a role model to them.”

“Football helped me make friends. Obviously off the pitch I was a little bit shy, but when I stepped on the pitch, I think everything was a little bit easier for me. The kids, they liked me. They wanted to be friends. So, I made a lot of friends through football, and now football is my life. And I'm enjoying every moment of it.”

“When I first moved, my English wasn't the best. And obviously on the pitch I had to communicate, talk. So, throughout my years, playing football in Canada was good for me because I improved my language. I improved my skills, and everything was cool.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Alphonso Davies, Goodwill Ambassador, UNHCR:
“Always enjoy every time you play football, smile. You know, the main thing, especially off the pitch is hydrate. You know, keep your head clear, rest your body, because, you know, when the tough game comes, you will need it for 90 minutes for sure.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Alphonso Davies, Goodwill Ambassador, UNHCR:
“Football helped me to be disciplined, to go to bed early, to prepare my body for the training, everything. And when I moved to Vancouver, football helped me to be independent as well, you know, moving without my family, moving without my friends, it was tough. But you have to have the strong mindset, that you can do something. So, yeah, moving on this side. The responsibility got a little bit bigger as well. And yeah, I mean, football, I don't know what else to say- but football, it changes your life and it gives you the opportunity to do great things on the field, gives the opportunity to be whatever you want to be at the end of your career. So, I'm happy that I'm able to play football at this level.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Alphonso Davies, Goodwill Ambassador, UNHCR:
“When I first saw these guys, even now, it's the same feeling I had when I first walked in the locker room, I couldn't believe if they were the real people. Like I said before, Arjen Robben was the first guy I saw so I couldn't believe it if it was actually Arjen Robben. So, every time I walk in the locker room and I look back, sit back and just look at them it's like, I'm so grateful for being in this position, it feels amazing to be playing with such quality players.”

STORYLINE
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, today (24 Mar) announced the appointment of Alphonso Davies, FC Bayern Munich’s left-back and player for Canada Men’s National Football Team, as its newest Global Goodwill Ambassador.

Born in a refugee camp in Ghana, to Liberian parents who fled the civil war in their home country, Davies knows first-hand what it means to be a refugee.

In an interview, Davis said, “I'm happy that they can see me as a role model. And, you know, there's a lot of a lot of footballers out that are refugees as well. And them, you know, picking me, you know, for them to look up to. It's amazing. So, I just want to give a good message to everyone that does look up to me. And I'm happy that I can be a role model to them.”

Davies and his family were resettled to Canada when he was five. At 15, Davies began playing professional football and only a year later he had his national team debut, making him the youngest player ever on Canada’s Men’s National Team. Now at 20, Alphonso is keen to support the work of UNHCR and harness the power of sport to help those forced to flee to build a better future:

He said, “football helped me make friends. Obviously off the pitch I was a little bit shy, but when I stepped on the pitch, I think everything was a little bit easier for me. The kids, they liked me. They wanted to be friends. So, I made a lot of friends through football, and now football is my life. And I'm enjoying every moment of it.”

The new Goodwill Ambassador said, “playing football in Canada was good for me because I improved my language. I improved my skills, and everything was cool.”

Davies started supporting UNHCR in 2020, including through a livestream tournament for refugees. In February 2021, Davies helped launch a Canadian Government campaign, called Together for Learning, to promote access to quality education for refugees around the world.

He said, “you have to have the strong mindset, that you can do something.”

On his arrival in Germany, he said, “when I first saw these guys, even now, it's the same feeling I had when I first walked in the locker room, I couldn't believe if they were the real people.

Davies is widely considered as one of the best left-backs in the world due to the combination of his explosive pace and vision. In 2020, he was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Season and was part of the FC Bayern Munich team winning six prestigious titles.
