STORYLINE
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said it was working to relocate thousands of Central African refugees living in makeshift shelters on the border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (UNHCR) to safer sites where they can better receive humanitarian assistance and protection.

Authorities in the DRC estimate that 92,000 refugees have arrived from the Central African Republic (CAR) after election-linked violence erupted two months ago.

Conditions are dire with many refugees sleeping in makeshift shelters, in the open. They have little or no access to drinking water, sanitation, and food in these hard-to-reach areas close to the border. Some have been welcomed in host families, and reports indicate that up to three refugee families are living in a single small home.

UNHCR said it was making progress with the biometric registration of the refugees to establish the number of new arrivals and to identify people with specific needs or vulnerabilities. Close to 40,000 refugees have been registered.

Nearly one third of the Central African Republic’s population of 4.7 million have been forced to flee after years of recurring conflict.
