To build on the success of the ACT-Accelerator and its COVAX Facility, the world has to immediately raise an additional 14 billion US dollars. It is imperative that vaccines are available and affordable everywhere as a global public good. Because no one is safe until we are all safe.”

STORYLINE
Speaking at the virtual meeting of the Nordic Council, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “it is essential that we rebuild our economies from the pandemic through effective climate action.”
Guterres pointed out that although the COVID-19 pandemic is threatening to reverse the progress on sustainable development made during the past 20 years, there is “some hope.”
” The COVAX Facility, which has the largest portfolio of COVID-19 vaccines, is now supported by more than 180 countries and economies,” said Guterres. “To build on the success of the ACT-Accelerator and its COVAX Facility, the world has to immediately raise an additional 14 billion US dollars. It is imperative that vaccines are available and affordable everywhere as a global public good.”
“No one is safe until we are all safe,” he underlined.
Guterres also spoke on the climate change and said “currently, the world is way off track” to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, which includes limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
“It is essential that we rebuild our economies from the pandemic through effective climate action that will create millions of better jobs, promote cleaner and more efficient technologies and bring better health worldwide,” he said.
To that end, the Secretary-General said, the United Nations is promoting six climate-positive actions that stakeholders can take in order to recover their economies in a sustainable way. These include investing in sustainable jobs and business, ensuring no more bailouts to polluting industries as well as ending subsidies for fossil fuels, especially coal, considering climate risks in all financial decisions and policy-making, working together in common cause and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Guterres said “we count on the leadership of the Nordic countries. The nations you represent have historically been among the strongest advocates of ambitious climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals. The world needs your leadership now more than ever.”
The Nordic Council is the official body for inter-parliamentary co-operation. Formed in 1952, it has 87 members from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.
