4. SOUNDBITE (English) Price Charles, heir to the British throne:
“If we are to restore the critical balance between people and planet, we need to protect, restore and invest in nature. After all, nature is central to all aspects of our existence. From the air we breathe, our nourishment and shelter to our spiritual, cultural and recreational wellbeing. This virtual circle of nature is something the world’s indigenous people understand only too well. And it is why we should listen and learn from the profound wisdom of their intuitive sixth sense, something we have so rationally and tragically discarded as being irrelevant in a modern world.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Price Charles, heir to the British throne:
“From my part, through my sustainable markets initiative and the great reset I am working with coalition of the willing to identify and scale up solutions that aim to put nature, people and planet at a heart of our economy.”
7. Med shot, GA podium
8. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, President of France:
“We must step up the fight against environmental crime. We must put a definitive end to all illegal activities that endanger nature, destroy ecosystems, feed corruption, hinder the development of the Rule of Law and, ultimately call into question the sustainable development of humanity. But this crisis must also push us to fundamentally transform our models of production, trade, consumption, because it is illusory to think that the development of societies can be based on a production model that destroys living things and therefore, ultimately, health and prosperity for all of us.”
9. Wide shot, GA podium
10. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil:
“I strongly reject international greed towards our coveted Amazon. And we shall defend it against actions and narratives that may prove harmful to our national interests. We therefore cannot accept that false and irresponsible information serve as a pretext to impose unfair international rules, that fail to consider the important environmental accomplishments we have achieved for the benefit of Brazil and the world at large. Accordingly, may I call to mind that the Convention on Biological Diversity enshrines the sovereign right of States to use their natural resources, in accordance with their environmental policies, and that is precisely what we intend to do with the huge wealth of resources found in the Brazilian territory. Also, in this regard, I call upon all participants to renew their commitment to the negotiations under the Convention, recognizing that Member States have common but differentiated responsibilities.”

STORYLINE
Taking part in the UN Biodiversity Summit, Prince Charles, heir to the British throne said that he is working with a “coalition of the willing” to put nature, people and planet at the heart of the economy. French President Macron called for stepping up “the fight against environmental crime,” while Brazil’s President Bolsonaro “strongly” rejected “international greed towards our coveted Amazon.”

The high-level event, which was hosted by the UN General Assembly, saw a number of video messages from Heads of State and Government.
In his pre-recorded video message, Prince Charles said “if we are to restore the critical balance between people and planet, we need to protect, restore and invest in nature. After all, nature is central to all aspects of our existence. From the air we breathe, our nourishment and shelter to our spiritual, cultural and recreational wellbeing. This virtues circle of nature is something the world’s indigenous people understand only too well. And it is why we should listen and learn from the profound wisdom of their intuitive sixth sense, something we have so rationally and tragically discarded as being irrelevant in a modern world.”

Also addressing the Summit via video message, the French President Emmanuel Macron said “we must step up the fight against environmental crime.

In his message, Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil, said he “strongly reject international greed towards our coveted Amazon. And we shall defend it against actions and narratives that may prove harmful to our national interests. We therefore cannot accept that false and irresponsible information serve as a pretext to impose unfair international rules, that fail to consider the important environmental accomplishments we have achieved for the benefit of Brazil and the world at large.”

“Accordingly,” Bolsonaro said, “may I call to mind that the Convention on Biological Diversity enshrines the sovereign right of States to use their natural resources, in accordance with their environmental policies, and that is precisely what we intend to do with the huge wealth of resources found in the Brazilian territory. Also, in this regard, I call upon all participants to renew their commitment to the negotiations under the Convention, recognizing that Member States have common but differentiated responsibilities.”
