STORYLINE
UNHCR’s Representative in Greece, Philippe Leclerc, stressed that burning a camp “is not a solution” and said, “There is despair but in no way can we justify violence.”

Speaking on Wednesday from an emergency site set up to rehouse some of the 12,000 refugees and asylum-seekers made homeless by a fire that levelled Moria camp last week, Leclerc said the Agency needed to act fast as it has done so far to ensure people are being processed and can leave the temporary site.

HE said, “We are organising support of the children, of those in need who are vulnerable, and they need a peaceful place to stay so they can continue their way. So right now, we need your help to ensure that this camp can play its role, so that people can after that join the mainland and possibly, for some, relocation in Europe.”
Touring the burnt camp, the UNHCR Representative said rebuilding must allow for less crowding, and for, decent and dignified temporary reception conditions, as well as efficient procedures. He said, “Only cats, birds around, some flames – because some people are making sure that any souvenir of Lesvos, Moria, disappears. Only ashes.”
