STORYLINE
UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, concluded his tour of Lebanon with a visit to refugee families in Tripoli and in the Bekaa valley, where he heard accounts of growing hardship and challenges.

When he got badly injured at work Khalil Ibrahim, a Syrian refugee sheltering in Lebanon with his family, has asked his 12-year-old daughter to work in seasonal harvest with her mother. A decision that weighed heavily on him.

“I took my daughter out of school, because we live in circumstances I cannot describe, said Khalili. “Rent, electricity, water, all these are things we have to pay for at the end of each month.”

The family has accumulated around USD 1000 in debt. Mona and her daughter earn less than USD 2 a day’s work and the coronavirus lockdown meant fewer work shifts.

UNHCR has increased its cash aid in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the deteriorating economic situation. But the needs continue to outpace the aid.

SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“We and the World Food Programme, UNICEF and many NGOs are working also with Lebanese and refugees to try on a humanitarian level, at least to overcome this very acute phase of the hardship.”

In recent months and as a result of the deepening economic and financial crisis that was exacerbated by COVID-19, the proportion of refugees living under the extreme poverty line jumped from 55 per cent to over 75 per cent today.
