STORYLINE
UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) “has launched an investigation to determine the facts and circumstances” of the incident that took place on the Lebanon-Israel border on Monday, a UN spokesperson said at a press briefing in New York.

On Monday (27 Jul) afternoon, Israel reportedly fired shells across the border into south Lebanon, while accusing Hezbollah for incursion into Israel over the so-called Blue Line, demarcating Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 and patrolled by the UN peacekeepers.

“I can say that the UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col, was immediately in contact with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Lebanese Armed Forces in order to contain the situation, decrease tension and restore the cessation of hostilities,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General told reporters in New York on Tuesday (28 Jul).

“Calm has returned to the area and UNIFIL is maintaining its presence on the ground,” Haq said.
