Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab led today a high-level delegation in a visit to UNIFIL Headquarters where he was briefed on the Mission’s work and continued cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces in the implementation of the UNIFIL’s mandate.

The delegation included Lebanese Minister of Defense Zeina Akkar and Lebanese Armed Forces’ Commander General Joseph Aoun.

"Lebanon is committed to the implementation of Resolution 1701, to the role of United Nations forces and to the preservation of its mandate and number of personnel without any modification," Prime Minister said. “I also reaffirm the importance of the continued coordination and close cooperation between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army, thereby facilitating the UNIFIL’s mission and fostering the confidence of the people of the South.”

For his part, Major General Stefano Del Col, Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said “this cooperation is at the centre of our collective success in maintaining nearly 14 years of calm in south Lebanon. Together, we have to build on this long period of unprecedented stability to be able to carry out our mandate effectively and without obstacles."

He added "I would also like to commend the Prime Minister’s strong and decisive leadership in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic."
