FIFA, the international governing body of football, and the World Health Organization (WHO) have teamed up to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) by launching a new awareness campaign led by world-renowned footballers, who are calling on all people around the world to follow five key steps to stop the spread of the disease.


At the launch of the “Pass the Message to Kick Out Coronavirus” campaign today (23 Mar) in Geneva, the WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said “football can reach millions of people, especially younger people, that public health officials cannot.”


The campaign promotes five key steps for people to follow to protect their health in line with WHO guidance, focused on hand washing, coughing etiquette, not touching your face, physical distance and staying home if feeling unwell.


FIFA President Gianni Infantino said “football means so much to billions of people around the world. So it is clear to me that we have to show leadership and solidarity in these difficult days.”

Infantino said, “there are no one actors in this campaign, just the players themselves. And they all want to highlight the advice that is provided to all of us to all of them by the WHO.”


The FIFA president said, “we have to follow the guidance of the WHO, of our governments. And after, we'll have to rebuild our relations, maybe and hopefully, with more solidarity and understanding for each other. Football is ready to play its part on that.”


Infantino said, “like in football, by acting together with determination, discipline, and teamwork, we will win.”

Twenty-eight players are involved in the video campaign, which is being published in 13 languages.
