Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Jean Arnault as his personal envoy to Bolivia to engage “with all Bolivian actors and offer United Nations support in efforts to find a peaceful resolution” to the Andean nation’s political crisis, “including through transparent, inclusive and credible elections.”

Arnault will be travelling to Bolivia today (14 Nov).

The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters in New York that “the Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about developments in Bolivia” and “reiterates his appeal to all Bolivians to refrain from violence and exercise maximum restraint.”

Arnault is the former Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Colombia and has also served as his Special Representative in Georgia, Afghanistan, Burundi and Guatemala.

Dujarric said that he will speak to “all relevant actors in Bolivia to offer the UN’s support and to find a peaceful solution to this ongoing crisis.”
