UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Pierre Krähenbühl, informed the Secretary-General today that he was resigning, effective immediately, said a UN spokesperson.

Speaking to reporters today (06 Nov) in New York, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, “the Secretary-General thanked Mr. Krähenbühl for his commitment and constant dedication to UNRWA and to Palestine refugees,” adding that “the Secretary-General reiterates his appreciation to UNRWA for their excellent work, which is essential to the well-being of Palestine refugees.”

Christian Saunders was named Officer-in-Charge of UNRWA earlier today.

Dujarric also said “at this time, it is vital that Member States and other partners remain committed to UNRWA and the services it provides”

He continued, “it is also critical for the international community to support the crucial work performed by the Agency in the areas of health, education, and humanitarian assistance, which is a source of stability in a volatile region.”

According to a statement released by UNRWA earlier this morning, the UN Secretary-General’s office has announced that the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) has completed a part of the ongoing inquiry into UNRWA management-related matters. The findings of OIOS revealed management issues which relate specifically to the former Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl.
