“Reports emerged on 23 October that the remains of 39 people were found inside a refrigerated lorry container parked at an industrial park in Essex, England. A police investigation was launched to conduct enquiries into these tragic deaths and piece together the circumstances of this incident. Eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men, and all are believed to be Chinese nationals. Initial police reports indicate that the trailer travelled from Zeebrugge, Belgium to the port of Purfleet in Essex on the same day, Wednesday the 23rd.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Joel Millman, Spokesperson, International Organization for Migration (IOM):
“These past few weeks have seen quite a spike in arrivals to Greece from Turkey. In fact, ten of the busiest days of the year for that route have all occurred between the last few days of August and October first.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Joel Millman, Spokesperson, International Organization for Migration (IOM):
“With the discovery of this truck on 23 October in Essex, we did get a lot of media requests wondering if this was a sign of a surge of all kinds of new routes being developed and have we picked up on that; and the answer would be no. These are the kinds of random crimes that happen every day in the world somewhere. They get huge attention when they do, but they don’t necessarily indicate a big shift in migration or patterns in any place in particular. It is just the conditions of what happens when these many people are engaged with this many criminal groups to reach a destination, which of course we deplore.”

STORYLINE
A spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) deplored the “tragic deaths” of 39 people found inside a refrigerated lorry container in the United Kingdom and stressed that the “random” crime did not “necessarily indicate a big shift in migration or patterns in any place in particular.”

Speaking to reporters in Geneva today (25 Oct), IOM spokesperson Joel Millman said reports emerged on 23 October that the remains of 39 people were found inside a refrigerated lorry container parked at an industrial park in Essex, England. A police investigation was launched to conduct enquiries into these tragic deaths and piece together the circumstances of this incident. He said, “Eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men, and all are believed to be Chinese nationals.” Initial police reports indicate that the trailer travelled from Zeebrugge, Belgium to the port of Purfleet in Essex on the same day.

The spokesperson said the discovery did not necessarily indicate a major shift in migration patterns. He added, “These are the kinds of random crimes that happen every day in the world somewhere. They get huge attention when they do, but they don’t necessarily indicate a big shift in migration or patterns in any place in particular. It is just the conditions of what happens when these many people are engaged with this many criminal groups to reach a destination, which of course we deplore.”

Millman noted there were also several deaths documented during the past weeks along the western Balkans route. He said, “At least 24 people have died on the Western Balkans route so far this year: eight deaths took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, six in Serbia, five in Croatia, three in North Macedonia and two in Slovenia. There were 41 deaths documented along this route in 2018.”

The IOM spokesperson added that these past few weeks have also seen “quite a spike in arrivals to Greece from Turkey. In fact, ten of the busiest days of the year for that route have all occurred between the last few days of August and October first.” Still, Millman said only one day during that period which witnessed the number of arrivals exceed 800 people, which is 10 times less the busiest day ever recorded for that route, which was 22 October 2015 with some 8,292 people.
