4. SOUNDBITE (French) Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
“We are firmly committed to protecting our forest. However, the preservation of our natural heritage cannot be done at the detriment to our development. It is inconceivable that the forests of the Congo Basin, which are best preserved in the world, receive only one percent of available financing. It is imperative for all international financial architecture, including the International Monetary Fund in its driving role of the development financing, to better integrate the environmental issues into their analysis of criteria and the macroeconomic challenges as they intervene into different countries.”

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
“I note converging views with the Secretary-General when it comes to the urgent need to readapt the MONUSCO’s configuration to the developments on the ground, concentrating further on the UN forces’ capacity for operational intervention side by side with the DRC’s Armed Forces. In other words, the Democratic Republic of the Congo still needs MONUSCO, but we need a MONUSCO that is nimble, well equipped, strong and has a properly adjusted mandate, such as in the case of the Rapid Intervention Brigade, which has already been able to derail the M23 Movement.”

8. SOUNDBITE (French) Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
“Today, the Democratic Republic of the Congo posses some 70 percent of the world reserves in ore that are strategically essential for energetic and digital transition that the humanity is going through. Rather than using these natural reserves as a source of a monopolistic profit, my country wants to open to the world and allow a regulated exploitation of its minerals, in exchange for industrialization and production of batteries and other components that have high value. The world needs cobalt, coltan and lithium. We want industrial jobs, training and development.”

STORYLINE
“The Democratic Republic of the Congo still needs MONUSCO, but we need a MONUSCO that is nimble, well equipped, strong and has a properly adjusted mandate,” said the President of the DRC Felix Tshisekedi in his first address to the UN General Assembly.
In his speech, Felix Tshisekedi, who was elected for a president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in January 2019,said his view and that of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “converge” when it comes to “the urgent need to readapt the MONUSCO’s configuration to the developments on the ground, concentrating further on the UN forces’ capacity for operational intervention side by side with the DRC’s Armed Forces.”
MONUSCO is the UN peacekeeping mission tasked in helping the Armed Forces of the DRC in maintaining peace and fighting numerous armed groups active in the vast central African country.
Noting that the DRC is home to some 47 percent of all forests on the African continent, Tshisekedi said “we are resolutely committed to protecting our forest. However, the preservation of our natural heritage cannot be done at the detriment to our development.”
He also said “it is inconceivable that the forests of the Congo Basin, which are best preserved in the world, receive only one percent of available financing. It is imperative for all international financial architecture, including the International Monetary Fund in its driving role of the development financing, to better integrate the environmental issues into their analysis of criteria and the macroeconomic challenges as they intervene into different countries.”
