Addressing the annual gathering of world leaders at United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday (24 Sep), UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of the looming risk of “a Great Fracture: the world splitting in two, with the two largest economies on earth creating two separate and competing worlds, each with their own dominant currency, trade and financial rules, their own internet and artificial intelligence capacities, and their own zero sum geopolitical and military strategies.”
He called for all possible efforts to avert the Great Fracture and maintain a universal system – a universal economy with universal respect for international law; a multipolar world with strong multilateral institutions.
The Secretary-General also issued a strong call for respect for all human rights, saying in the 21st century, no one should be persecuted for their faith, identity or sexuality. He stressed that the world cannot wait generations for an end to inequality.
