3. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“And at this time of transition and dysfunction in global power relations, there is a new risk looming on the horizon that may not yet be large, but it is real.
I fear the possibility of a Great Fracture: the world splitting in two, with the two largest economies on earth creating two separate and competing worlds, each with their own dominant currency, trade and financial rules, their own internet and artificial intelligence capacities, and their own zero sum geopolitical and military strategies.
We must do everything possible to avert the Great Fracture and maintain a universal system – a universal economy with universal respect for international law; a multipolar world with strong multilateral institutions.”

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“To those who insist on oppression or division, I say: diversity is a richness, never a threat. It is unacceptable in the 21st century for women and men to be persecuted because of their identity, belief or sexual orientation. We must also secure the rights of vulnerable and marginalized people.”
6. Med shot, former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife, Yoo Soon-Taek
7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“At present trends, it will take two centuries to close the gap in economic empowerment. We cannot accept a world that tells my granddaughters that equality must wait for their granddaughters’ granddaughters.”
8. Wide shot, General Assembly Hall
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, President of the United Nations General Assembly:
“Without doubt, the challenges posed by health pandemics, terrorism, displacement and climate change as well as illiteracy and poverty, will not be resolved by individual countries, as they all require focused cooperation to stem.”

STORYLINE
Addressing the annual gathering of world leaders at United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday (24 Sep), UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of the looming risk of “a Great Fracture: the world splitting in two, with the two largest economies on earth creating two separate and competing worlds, each with their own dominant currency, trade and financial rules, their own internet and artificial intelligence capacities, and their own zero sum geopolitical and military strategies.”

He called for all possible efforts to avert the Great Fracture and maintain a universal system – a universal economy with universal respect for international law; a multipolar world with strong multilateral institutions.

The Secretary-General also issued a strong call for respect for all human rights, saying in the 21st century, no one should be persecuted for their faith, identity or sexuality. He stressed that the world cannot wait generations for an end to inequality.

Also addressing the Assembly, its President, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, “Without doubt, the challenges posed by health pandemics, terrorism, displacement and climate change as well as illiteracy and poverty, will not be resolved by individual countries, as they all require focused cooperation to stem.”

The Assembly will hear from scores of heads of State and government as well as other senior officials over the course of its weeklong General Debate. Numerous side events related to major issues across the international agenda are also taking place as world leaders gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York for the annual high-level week.
