According to press reports, Israel last week launched airstrikes in retaliation to rocket attacks from Gaza. This situation, Fernandez-Taranco said, “threaten to derail the precarious calm.”
The Peacebuilding official urged Israel to lift restrictions on the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza, “with due considerations of its legitimate security concerns.”
Unless these restrictions are eased, he said “the Palestinian economy can never be self-sustaining or generate enough tax revenues for the Palestinian Authority to sustain its operation without donor support.”
