3. SOUNDBITE (English) Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support:
“The indiscriminate launching of rockets from Gaza into Israel and the subsequent Israeli strikes on Gaza threaten to derail the precarious calm. A new conflict would be devastating for the Palestinian people, it would have consequences for Israelis who live in the vicinity of the Gaza perimeter, and would be likely to have regional repercussions.”
4. Wide shot, Trusteeship Council
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support:
“I urge Israel to lift restrictions on the movement of people and goods, with due considerations of its legitimate security concerns. Unless these restrictions are eased, the Palestinian economy can never be self-sustaining or generate enough tax revenues for the Palestinian Authority to sustain its operation without donor support.”
6. Wide shot, Trusteeship Council
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations:
“We do not accept the fate of being between a rock and a hard place. The Israeli occupying authority in a ruthless way denying our people our rights, and stealing our land, and the United States of America’s administration giving them all the political support, and also denying at the political level and the diplomatic level our rights, taking away Jerusalem, and the list is so long, and you know it.”
8. Wide shot, Trusteeship Council
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations:
“We can come and talk about so many details; about what’s happening in Gaza, what’s happening, you know, to the refugees, what’s happening in occupied East Jerusalem, but yet, the big subject is what are we doing to end this occupation, and to do it to end it yesterday, not even, you know, today or tomorrow.”

STORYLINE
Addressing the United Nations Forum on the Question of Palestine, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, today (04 Apr) said a new Israeli-Palestinian conflict “would be devastating for the Palestinian people, it would have consequences for Israelis who live in the vicinity of the Gaza perimeter, and would be likely to have regional repercussions.”

According to press reports, Israel last week launched airstrikes in retaliation to rocket attacks from Gaza. This situation, Fernandez-Taranco said, “threaten to derail the precarious calm.”

The Peacebuilding official urged Israel to lift restrictions on the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza, “with due considerations of its legitimate security concerns.”

Unless these restrictions are eased, he said “the Palestinian economy can never be self-sustaining or generate enough tax revenues for the Palestinian Authority to sustain its operation without donor support.”

In his address to the Forum, Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said, “we do not accept the fate of being between a rock and a hard place. The Israeli occupying authority in a ruthless way denying our people our rights, and stealing our land, and the United States of America’s administration giving them all the political support, and also denying at the political level and the diplomatic level our rights, taking away Jerusalem, and the list is so long, and you know it.”

Mansour said, “we can come and talk about so many details; about what’s happening in Gaza, what’s happening, you know, to the refugees, what’s happening in occupied East Jerusalem, but yet, the big subject is what are we doing to end this occupation, and to do it to end it yesterday, not even, you know, today or tomorrow.”

The Forum, “The threat of de facto annexation - What next for Palestine?” was convened by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP).
