STORYLINE
The President of the United Nations Security Council and the head of the UN’s mission in the country have strongly condemned a deadly attack against civilians in the Mopti region.
François Delattre, France’s Permanent Representative to the Security Council and its President for March, strongly condemned the attack in remarks at a press conference Saturday evening (23 March) in the Malian capital, Bamako.
Located in Mali’s central Mopti region, the village of Ogossou-Peulh was attacked on Saturday morning, reportedly by armed men dressed as traditional hunters.
Mahamat Saleh Annadif, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Mali, said the United Nations mission in the country stands ready to support the Government in its efforts to calm the situation. He said, “I issue a call on the Malian authorities to expedite an investigation so that justice can be served and so that the perpetrators can answer for their crimes.”
Through a spokesperson, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also called for bringing the perpetrators to justice through a swift investigation. He also called on the Malian authorities to redouble their efforts to bring back peace and stability to central Mali.
According to reports, at least 134 civilians, including women and children, were killed and at least 55 others injured in the attack.
The Mopti region has been the scene of deadly violence since the beginning of the year.
A delegation from the Security Council has been in the country since late last week as part of a mission to Africa’s troubled Sahel region. The trip will wrap up tomorrow in Burkina Faso.
