UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters today (21 Mar) in New York that the UN system as a whole has been making it clear its concern about the situation as it unfolded.
According to news reports, Roberto Marrero, opposition leader Juan Guaidó's Chief of Staff, was detained by the Venezuela’s police earlier today.
He said on the latest development regarding the political situation in the country, “the High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has been closely following the situation, and she has expressed her concerns about this detention. And yesterday, High Commissioner Bachelet expressed deep concern about the shrinking of the democratic space in Venezuela.”
Haq noted that the Human Rights chief has called on “the Venezuela authorities to take steps to demonstrate the real commitment to addressing the many human rights issues, including arbitrary detentions.”
Haq reiterated that it was "crucial" for Venezuelan leaders to "engage in dialogue with each other. And we’ve called of course on all parties, including the security forces to take steps to de-escalating the situation and we are continuing that call.”
